Reading in the garden in the shade of a birch tree - such a pleasure. Let's hope this beautiful weather continues. That's the reader speaking; as a gardener, though, I'm longing for rain!
I've just finished reading 'Annabel' and found it a stimulating and enjoyable read. Marvellous sense of place and time with strongly drawn characters and important themes. A clear and consistent narrative voice, very much in the north American tradition, exploring the tensions and conflicts between individual, family and wider social values.
Some aspects of the novel annoyed me or I just didn't 'buy' them, but overall a pretty successful book.
Moving on to "Grace Williams says it out loud" now. Judging by the comments already posted it looks like it's going to be a challenging but rewarding read.
